Indian tradition holds that the manner in which a mother is taken care of during the first 40 days after giving birth will influence the next 40 years of her life. As the mother is considered the heart of the family, when she is healthy (emotionally, physically, and spiritually), the entire family will be as well. The act of giving birth may only take 1-2 days, but it takes a mother approximately 6 weeks to fully adjust to her role as a mother. During this time, a new mother is as fragile both mentally and physically as her newborn and requires love, nourishment, rest, and care to fully embrace her new role.
This period is marked by the most significant changes in a woman's life on all levels and is also the most taxing, with the constant needs of the baby requiring round-the-clock attention. This can make the process of recovery and adaptation difficult, often leading to postpartum depression.
